Air Pollution

L’INQUINAMENTO DELL’ARIA - Erynoole

Air Pollution

Air pollution is due to the presence of chemicals, present in the air, in quantities that are harmful to human health, animals, plants and the planet as a whole.

Air pollution is caused by human activities (such as emissions from vehicles, industries, building constructions, etc.) and natural activities (such as volcanic eruptions, fires, etc.) but the latter are much rarer and they usually cause damage locally, while human activities cause pollution globally, every single day.

Nowadays the main cause of air pollution is the burning of fossil fuels, for example every day when we burn oil, diesel and coal to run our means of transport, industries and power plants. we release significant quantities of pollutants into the atmosphere, endangering our ecosystem and consequently the lives of all of us.

In most cases, these pollutants are not visible and have no smell, but this does not mean that they are not harmful, on the contrary, this is why they are so harmful to human health, because we cannot see them, smell them and constantly release them into the air we breathe every day.

Depending on the level of exposure and the type of pollutants inhaled, these can have different effects on human health, ranging from mild symptoms such as cough and irritation of the respiratory system, to acute symptoms such as asthma and chronic lung diseases. Prolonged exposure to this type of pollution can lead to irritation and skin lesions in the most sensitive subjects, and inhaling large quantities of these pollutants can lead to various forms of cancer, such as that of the throat, tongue and lung.

For this we must protect ourselves and our planet from air pollution.

Main causes of air pollution:

  • Vehicle emissions
  • Industrial processes
  • Power stations
  • Construction
  • Mining
  • Waste incinerators
  • Domestic heating
  • And many more….

Main air pollutants:

  • Suspended particulates (PM 10 and PM 2.5)
  • Carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Oxides of nitrogen (NO and NO2)
  • Sulfur dioxide (SO2)
  • Ozone (O3)
  • VOCs (volatile organic compounds)
  • And many more….

Main effects on human health:

  • Cough and irritation of the respiratory system
  • Asthma
  • Chronic lung diseases
  • Skin irritations
  • Cancer (throat, lungs, tongue, etc.)
  • And many more….

Main effects on the ecosystem:

  • Smog
  • Acid rain
  • Greenhouse effect
  • Ozone holes
  • And many more….
